The settlement of Pikend

The Paykend settlement is one of the most ancient archaeological sites of the Bukhara region, located about 60 km southwest of Bukhara. It was once an important trading center on the Great Silk Road, through which caravans from China, India and Persia passed.

Pikend occupied an area of about 20 hectares and was surrounded by powerful walls and towers. The city was famous for crafts, trade and architecture, and in the 8th century it became one of the first centers of Islam in the region.

Today, ruins of ancient walls, fragments of residential areas and mosques can be seen here. The museum of the history of Pikenda is open nearby, where archaeological finds are on display — ceramics, coins, jewelry and household items.

Paykend is called the "city of merchants", and it is rightfully considered one of the key monuments of the ancient Bukhara civilization, which preserved the spirit of the Great Silk Road.
