Learn about Uzbekistan's currency, the best ways to exchange money, and useful financial tips for travelers.

The national currency of the Republic of Uzbekistan is the sum (UZS). All payments in the country are carried out mainly in soums, and it is this currency that is used to pay for goods, services, accommodation, transportation costs and other daily operations.

Foreign currency is not used in free circulation, therefore, upon arrival in the country, it is recommended to exchange money for a sum at official exchange offices. Currency exchange is carried out in banks, exchange offices of hotels, airports and large shopping malls. Each transaction is accompanied by the issuance of a receipt confirming the legality of the exchange. Conducting currency transactions outside official institutions is prohibited and may entail administrative liability.

In large cities and tourist centers, bank cards of international payment systems such as Visa, MasterCard, UnionPay, as well as the national Uzcard system are increasingly accepted for payment. However, when traveling outside Tashkent, Samarkand or Bukhara, it is recommended to carry cash with you, as the use of bank cards in remote areas may be limited.

Cash withdrawal is possible at ATMs installed in banks, hotels and shopping malls. Most ATMs operate around the clock and issue cash both in soums and, in some cases, in foreign currency. However, when using international cards, a conversion fee is possible.

Currency transactions are regulated by the Central Bank of Uzbekistan. The import of foreign currency into the country is allowed without restrictions, but amounts exceeding the established limit are subject to mandatory written declaration when crossing the border. When leaving the country, it is allowed to export an amount not exceeding the amount declared upon entry.

Non-cash payments in Uzbekistan are gradually developing, and in many hotels, restaurants and travel agencies it is possible to pay for services using bank terminals or mobile payment applications. However, in small cafes, markets, and craft shops, payments are most often made in cash.

For convenience, it is recommended to have banknotes of different denominations with you, since the exchange of large amounts is not always possible in small retail outlets. It should also be borne in mind that banknotes that are damaged, torn, or heavily soiled may not be accepted for payment.

Thus, the system of monetary settlements in Uzbekistan is quite simple and convenient for tourists. Compliance with the established rules of currency exchange and the use of official banking channels ensure the security of financial transactions and a comfortable stay in the country.
