Lake Ulugshurkul

The Ulugshurkul salt Lake belongs to two states: the southern part to Turkmenistan and the northern part to Uzbekistan. On the territory of the latter, it is located in the Khorezm region.

It is convenient to visit Ulugshurkul from the ancient city of Khiva, which is located 16 km from the reservoir. The lake has the largest width of 4 km in the northern part and narrows to the south. Its length reaches 16 km and its area is about 15 km2. The size of the lake depends on the season. On three sides, except the north, the reservoir is surrounded by the Karakum desert.

To feed the lakes in the Khorezm region and maintain the overall level, in the 1960s Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan built a collector that solved the problems of irrigation and floods. Ulugshurkul is a place of industrial fishing and recreation areas.
