Memorial to Jalal al-Din Manguberdi
Among the numerous monuments of Urgench, the memorial to Jalal al-Din Manguberdi is second only in size to those dedicated to Tamerlane. The national hero of Uzbekistan, a great warrior and wise ruler, he freed the people from Mongol oppression and significantly expanded the borders of the Khorezm Khanate during his reign.
An entire architectural complex is dedicated to Manguberdi. It was opened in 1999 in honor of the 800th anniversary of the great ruler. It is an arch with a warrior standing inside. On the sides there are two high rotundas, which support 10 columns each — they support a dome above the arch with a warrior, vaguely resembling a flying saucer.
