South Surkhan reservoir

The South Surkhan reservoir was built in the Syrdarya region of Uzbekistan in 1962. The Surkhandarya River, a right tributary of the Amu Darya, was blocked by an almost 5-kilometer-high earthen dam with a height of 20 m. Thanks to the newly created water reservoir, the southern region was provided with life-giving moisture on an area of 71,000 hectares, allowing it to grow high yields of vegetables and fruits.

The labor needs that arose during construction and for operation turned the village of Kumkurgan into a city that became a regional center. The volume of the Yuzhno-Surkhan reservoir ranges from 100 to 800 thousand m3. The length of the lake reaches 20 km, width 5.2 km, depth 27 m.
