Monument to Mirzo Ulugbek

The monument to Mirzo Ulugbek is located next to the memorial museum and the ruins of his famous observatory, on a small hill in the northeastern part of Samarkand.

The sculpture is made of bronze and depicts a scientist in a sitting position on an armchair. In his hands he holds a bundle symbolizing manuscripts and scientific works.

There is a stele or panel behind the monument, which shows an image of the starry sky, which emphasizes the connection of the composition with astronomy and the heritage of Ulugbek.

Although the monument is quite expressive, it is often called "moderate" in scale — it is not huge, but harmoniously fits into the memorial complex of the observatory.

The main purpose of the monument is not just to perpetuate the figure of Ulugbek, but to connect it with the place where he conducted his observations: the observatory, and to emphasize his role as a scientist and astronomer.
