Muhammad Aminhana Madrasah
One of the main attractions located in the historical part of the city of Ichankale is the Muhammad Aminhana Madrasah. This is the largest madrasah not only in Khiva, but also throughout Central Asia. The two-storey building covers an area of 72 by 60 meters, and has 125 hujras (cells) designed for 260 students. The uniqueness of this educational institution was that each hujra consisted of two rooms, and the hujras located on the second floor had a room and a loggia facing the facade of the building.
The madrasah was built in 1851-1854, by order of the ruler of Khiva, Muhammad Aminkhan, and received his name. The building is dominated by five domes and corner towers. The facade is decorated with rich glazed brick decor, wooden doors abound with ornamental carvings, majolica cladding is striking with floral patterns, and above the entrance there is an inscription in Arabic "This beautiful building will forever stand for the joy of posterity."
Muhammad Aminhana Madrasah is located opposite another landmark of Khiva– Kunya Arch, at Ata Darvaza Gate. And right in front of the building stands one of the main symbols of the city – the Kalta Minor minaret, the construction of which was supervised by the same Muhammad Aminkhan. But Khan was killed, and the minaret, which was supposed to become one of the tallest in the world, was never completed – instead of 70 meters, its height is only 29 meters.
Once upon a time, the Muhammad Aminkhan madrasah was one of the richest educational institutions, and owned numerous waqf lands. In addition, the building housed the Office of the Supreme Muslim Court. Today, there is a travel agency, a hotel, a currency exchange office and a cafe. However, this magnificent building has preserved its historical appearance, and even after a century it impresses the residents and guests of Khiva with its grandeur.
