Mirabad Market

The Mirabad market is located in the central part of the Uzbek capital. It is easy to recognize it by its large canopy and high gate with an inscription in the local language Mirobod dehqon bozori.

A couple of years ago, during the last restoration work, the market lost its calling card — turquoise coating on the roof. According to the residents of Tashkent, it gave the shopping area a peculiar charm and uniqueness. The changes partially affected the steel structure of the market. Few visitors to the bazaar in Tashkent know that during its construction in 1995-1996, a technology unique to the city was used. It consisted in the uncharacteristic installation of buildings in the CIS countries — the roof frame was assembled on the ground, and then lifted up with the help of electric jacks.

However, the history of the Mirabad market began in the middle of the last century. At that time, the future shopping area served as a site for a hospital where soldiers wounded in military operations were treated. The area adjacent to the hospital was chosen by local merchants. Sweets and oriental delicacies were sold here. Trade was brisk, and the buyers were mostly foreigners. And although the market has changed a lot since then and has acquired more civilized features, locals still call it the "Hospital Bazaar" or simply "Hospital" in everyday life.
