Mazlumkhan Sulu Mausoleum

Among the diverse architectural monuments of Ancient Khorezm, the mausoleum of Maslumkhan-sulu (Mazlumkhan-sulu) deserves close attention. The beginning of the construction of this mausoleum dates back to about the 12th century. The mausoleum attracts travelers from all over the world not only for its unique architecture, but also for the amazing and at the same time tragic legend associated with its construction.

Legend has it that once upon a time, the ruler of Khorezm ordered a young architect to build a building that would match the greatness of the ruler after his death. The architect worked hard at his work, and one day he saw a girl whose beauty even the sun and moon could not match. He fell in love with her, but she did not reciprocate him, since she was the daughter of that ruler. When the architect finished work on the building, he confessed his love to her, but the proud beauty cruelly rejected him, saying that she would love him if he fell down. Without hesitation, the master obeyed the order of his beloved and died. Only then did the girl realize the full force of the architect's love, and out of desperation for her act, she committed suicide. So says the legend…

It is believed that the mausoleum got its name from the name of this very girl, Hansulu. And it is she who is buried in the necropolis. The mausoleum was originally an underground necropolis. Later, other burials were carried out here. So, two burials were found in the hall of the underground necropolis. But over time, the portal of the mausoleum collapsed and the mausoleum was rebuilt, as a result of which new ground structures were erected.

The internal architecture of the mausoleum is a central hall with several deep and one shallow niche. The western wall of the central room is connected to the small hall by a huge arch decorated with beautiful patterns. The octagonal dome of the building is covered with azure paint.

The mausoleum of Maslumkhan-sulu is not just an architectural monument, but also a magnificent example of what a person can do for love....
